Regional Trade Statistics: Pre-announcement of Revisions to Historical Data08 May 2013

Following routine quality assurance and checking procedures, Trade Statistics has identified some errors in declarations made by traders.

Given the scale of the changes, HMRC will revise the trade figures for:

  • 2 commodity codes for 2008 (for EU trade only)
  • 6 commodity codes for 2009 (for EU trade only)
  • 4 commodity codes for 2010 (for EU trade only)
  • 6 commodity codes for 2011 (5 for EU trade and 1 for Non-EU trade)

There will also be further large scale revisions to correct a processing error that has affected the regional distribution of trade. All RTS data from 2008 onwards has been revised to correct this error. The error had predominantly resulted in EU trade for a large number of business branches being incorrectly placed in the ‘Unknown’ region, rather than being allocated to the region of the main reporting unit of the business where possible. The error has also resulted in a small amount of EU and non-EU trade being allocated to incorrect regions. The effect of the change is:

  • A large amount of EU trade that was previously allocated to the Unknown region is now allocated to the region where the main reporting unit of the business is located;
  • A small amount of trade (both EU and non-EU) that was previously allocated to an incorrect region is now allocated to the region where the main reporting unit of the business is located.

These revisions will be released on 6 June 2013, in conjunction with the 2013 first quarter publication of the Regional Trade Statistics.
